The ventromental plates partly cover the mentum and may extend laterally in Chironominae Ventrom plate Chironominae. In Prodiamesinae they are large with long setae and in Orthocladiinae they are often weak, but in some genera the ventromental plates partly cover the mentum teeth Ventrom plate Orthocladiinae.
