Body
Medium sized larvae with a length up to 9 mm. Living larvae are rusty-brown with white spots. No fringe of swimming hairs.
Head
The head length is 0.8 - 1.0 mm with a cephalic index of 48 - 55 (Moller Pillot, 1984a).
Antenna
The antennal segments are all yellow and the antennal ratio is 2.6 - 3.5. The ring organ is situated at 0.55 - 0.65 of the height of the first segment. The second segment is normal and lacks a tuning fork (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984a).
Mentum
Dorsomentum without teeth.
Ligula and paraligula
Ligula with 5 brown teeth in a straight row. Paraligula with a long outer and a smaller inner tooth Zav ligula paraligula.
Mandible
The mandible has a large basal tooth and a prominent accessory tooth.
Maxilla
The maxilla is short with an undivided basal segment.
Anal tubules
4 anal tubules which are longer than wide.
Posterior parapods
All claws on posterior parapods are yellow. One claw with a large inner tooth Zav claw.
Differential characteristics
Amongst the Pentaneurini only Paramerina (cingulata) en Zavrelimyia share the straight ligula Zav ligula paraligula and one inner tooth of one claw on the posterior parapods Zav claw. Zavrelimyia can be easily pointed out by a mach larger head length (0.8 - 1.0 mm) than Paramerina (0.5 - 0.7).
