Species E. fittkaui and E. minor sensu Schmid, 1993
Body
Medium sized larvae up to 7 mm long. The body setae form lateral pairs which are about 1/4 of the segment. The anterior parapods are separate. The two posterior parapods bear rows of claws. Procercus and two pairs of anal tubules present (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984b).
Head
In freshly preserved larvae the head is brown to dark brown and 0.31 - 0.36 mm long (Schmid, 1993).
Antenna
The antenna consists of 5 segments. The blade reaches the apex of segment 4. Lauterborn organs are present (Schmid, 1993).
Mentum
The mentum has one median tooth, which is appr. 3 - 4 x as wide as the first lateral, and 5 pairs of lateral teeth. The ventromental plates are weak. The beard is absent.
Labrum
The pecten epipharyngis consists of three scales. SI is simpel (Wiederholm, 1983; Schmid, 1993).
Mandible
The mandible has an apical tooth and 4 inner teeth. The mola is strongly serrated (Schmid, 1993).
Differential characteristics
The combination of a mentum with 5 pairs of lateral teeth, weak ventromental plates, mandible with 3-4 inner teeth and spines on the mola, simpel SI and procercus present separate Eukiefferiella from all other Orthocladiinae except Tvetenia. Eukiefferiella differs from Tvetenia in having inconspicuous body setae while they are very distinct in Tvetenia Tvet discoloripes body setae.
E. gr. fittkaui can be separated from the other Eukiefferiella species by the brown head in combination with the single median mental tooth being 3 - 4 x as wide as the first lateral.
