Saether, 1977
Body
Medium sized larvae up to 8 mm long. Few claws on the very elongated posterior parapods Chern macroc anal segments. No lateral and ventral tubules. Procercus short and anal tubules elongated (Chernovskij, 1961; Wiederholm, 1983).
Head
Antenna
The antenna is almost as long as the head with 8 segments Chern macroc antenna 8. The blade is much shorter than the flagellum. Lauterborn organs are absent.
Mentum
The anterior margin of the mentum is deeply concave with a middle tooth and 5 pairs of lateral lamellae. The outer one subdivided into three parts. The ventromental plates ar about as wide as the mentum in C. macrocera Chern macroc mentum 2. In C. orbicus the mentum consists of a broad median tooth and four pairs of lateral teeth Chern orb ment.
Labrum
SI is simpel and labral lamellae are absent. The pecten epipharyngis consists of a single scale. The premandible has three apical teeth.
Mandible
The mandible with an apical tooth and no (C. orbicus) or only 1 inner tooth Chern macroc mandible 2 8, The pecten mandibularis and seta interna are absent.
Differential characteristics
Chernovskiia is the only genus with 8 antennal segments Chern macroc antenna 8 and the mentum Chern macroc mentum 2 and Chern orb ment differs from all other Chironominae.
