Genus Gymnometriocnemus

Goetghebuer, 1932

Body
Small to medium sized larvae up to 6 mm long. Living larvae are yellowish with (yellow) spots on the thorax. The anterior parapods are fused. The two posterior parapods are divided into 2 parts bearing claws anteriorly. The posterior parapods and anal tubules can retract into the prenanal segment. The procercus is absent. The anal segment and the posterior parapods are at a right angle with the body axis Bryoph gr muscicola anal segm (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984b).

Head
The head length is 0.4 mm.
Antenna
The antenna consists of five segments. Segment 2 is subequal to segment 1. The blade is shorter or longer than flagellum. Lauterborn organs are conspicuous Gymnom gr subnudus antenna.
Mentum
The mentum has two median teeth and 4 pairs of lateral teeth or 1 broad median tooth and 5 pairs of lateral teeth in G. gr. subnudus. The ventromental plates are broad but do not cover any teeth. The beard is absent Gymnom gr subnudus mentum.
Labrum
The pecten epipharyngis consists of three teeth, SI is simpel and the premandible has three teeth (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984b).
Mandible
The mandible has an apical tooth and 3 inner teeth. The seta interna is apparently absent (Wiederholm, 1983).

Differential characteristics
The right angle between the anal segment and the body axis Bryoph gr muscicola anal segm is distinctive for Gymnometriocnemus and Bryophenocladius. Wiederholm (1983a) separates these genera by undivided posterior parapods in Bryophaenocladius and divided parapods in Gymnometriocnemus. Also Gymnometriocnemus without anal tubules or vestigial while Bryophaenocladius has 2 pairs.
