Body
Small to medium sized larvae up to 5 mm long. Living larvae with spots of different colour on thorax and last abdominal segments. The anterior parapods are fused and bearing claws. The two posterior parapods are present with some claws, or reduced. The procercus is absent and two pairs of anal tubules are present Pseudosm arenaria anal segm 8 (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984b).
Head
The compound eye consists of a large upper and a small lower eye Pseudosm trilobata head lat.
Antenna
The antenna is reduced and consists of 3-4 segments. The blade is longer than the flagellum Pseudosm arenaria antenna, sometimes as much as 10 x as long Pseudosm cf trilobata antenna. Lauterborn organs are indistinct.
Mentum
The mentum has one median tooth and 4-5 pairs of lateral teeth. The ventromental plates are narrow. The beard is absent Pseudosm arenaria mentum.
Labrum
The pecten epipharyngis consists of three spines, SI is bifid and the premandible has 2-4 teeth (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984b).
Mandible
The mandible has an apical tooth and 3 inner teeth. The seta interna is absent. (Wiederholm, 1983).
Differential characteristics
The combination of the lack of the procercus and the compound eye with an upper and a small lower eye are distinctive for Pseudosmittia.
