Kieffer, 1919
Body
Large larvae up to 14 mm long. Living larvae red. No lateral and ventral tubules. (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984a).
Head
Anterior margin of frontal apotome is convex without a subapical pit. Labral sclerites 1 absent sclerite 2 present.
Head
Antenna
The antenna consists of 6 segments. The blade is as long as or a little shorter than the flagellum. Lauterborn organs alternate on segment 2 and 3 Sticto antenna 8.
Mentum
The mentum has 4 median teeth, the middle pairs much smaller than the outer pairs. These teeth are set forward and are connected to the ventromental plates, 6 pairs of lateral teeth are present Sticto mentum normal. Under high magnification (200x or more) a brown band can be seen just beneath the teeth of the mentum. Often the mentum is heavily worn Sticto mentum worn. The ventromental plates are 1.2x as wide as the mentum.
Labrum
SI is plumose and labral lamellae form a single plate with numerous distal teeth. The pecten epipharyngis consists of 3 scales with distal teeth. The premandible has three apical teeth.
Mandible
The mandible with a distinct dorsal tooth, apical tooth and 2-3 inner teeth Sticto mandible normal. The pecten mandibularis is present and seta interna with 4 plumose branches.
Differential characteristics
Larvae with 4 median mental teeth and alternating Lauterborn organs belong to Stictochironomus, Omisus or Paratendipes. Stictochironomus has the outer mid mental teeth pointing upwards Sticto mentum normal, while these teeth point inwards in Omisus Omisus mentum. Paratendipes has 4 equally large middle teeth Paratend albi mentum9 or the inner teeth are larger than the outer pairs Paraten conn 3 mentum. Besides that Omisus has a premandible with only 2 teeth and Paratendipes has a maximum length of only 8 mm.
