Constempellina brevicosta

(Edwards, 1937)

Body
Small to medium sized larvae up to 5 mm long. The posterior parapods with only simpel claws. The larvae have a transportable case Stempellina tube (Wiederholm, 1983).

Head
The S3 is simpel.
Antenna
The antenna stands on a distinct pedestal with a large spur and consists of 5 segments. The basal segment is longer than the flagellum. Segment 2 is wedge-shaped and about as long as or longer than the third segment. The Lauterborn organs distally on segment 2 with a pedestal that does not reach the apex Constemp brevicosta antenna.
Mentum
The mentum has a simpel median tooth and 6 pairs of lateral teeth. The ventromental plates are widely serrated medially and not as wide as the mentum Constemp brevicosta mentum.
Labrum
SI is a comb and labral lamellae a single plate with numerous apical teeth. The pecten epipharyngis consists of 3 simpel spines. The premandible has 5 teeth.
Mandible
The mandible with a dorsal tooth, apical tooth and 2 inner teeth. The pecten mandibularis is present and seta interna with branches.

Differential characteristics
The large spur on the antennal pedicel, opposite Lauterborn organs and their pedestals not reaching the antennal apex and 6 pairs of lateral teeth on the mentum are distinctive Constemp brevicosta mentum. From the larvae with a transportable case the combination of a large spur on the antennal pedestal and opposite Lauterborn organs separate Constempellina from all other Tanytarsini.
