Camptocladius stercorarius

(De Geer, 1850)

Body
Medium sized larvae up to 5 mm long. Living larvae with yellow or rusty stains on thorax and abdomen (Moller Pillot, 1984b). The abdomen seems to be bear. The anterior parapods are fused bearing small spines. The two posterior parapods are undivided. The posterior parapods and procercus are absent. Two pairs of short anal tubules present (Wiederholm, 1983 ; Moller Pillot, 1984b).

Head
The head length can be more than 0.3 mm in Dutch larvae (Moller Pillot, 1984b). The headcapsule with a heavy sclerotized projection next to the antennal base (Wiederholm, 1983).
Antenna
The antenna consists of only three segments. The blade is longer than the flagellum and twisted backwords Campctcl sterc antenna.
Mentum
The mentum has one broad median tooth and 4 pairs of lateral teeth Camptcl sterc mentum. The ventromental plates weak and the beard is absent.
Labrum
The pecten epipharyngis consists of three broad scales, SI and SII are bifid and the premandible has three teeth (Wiederholm, 1983).
Mandible
The mandible with a distal tooth and 4 inner teeth. The seta interna is absent (Wiederholm, 1983).

Differential characteristics
Within the terrestrial Orthocladiinae, only Camptocladius lacks posterior parapods, however some other genera can retract their parapods into the anal segments (eg. Bryphaenocladius, Gymnometriocnemus and Paraphaenocladius. Camptocladius however has apparently only one pair of eyes while the other genera have two pairs that may be fused partly.
