Zalutschia zalutschicola

Lipina, 1939

Body
Small to medium sized larvae 4.65 - 5.91 mm long. Preserved larvae have a brown stained thorax. The anterior and posterior parapods are separate and bear rows of claws. Procercus well developed and sclerotized caudally. Two pairs of anal tubules present (Wiederholm, 1983; Saether, 1976).

Head
Head length 0.36 - 0.43 mm (Saether, 1976).
Antenna
The antenna consists of six segments. The antennal blade is longer than the flagellum. Lauterborn organs are conspicuous (Saether, 1976).
Mentum
The mentum has three pale median teeth (only two when worn) and 6 pairs of lateral teeth of which the first and the sixth pairs are reduced. The ventromental plates are large and rounded laterally covering mental teeth. The beard is very small Zal zalutschicola ment pict.
Labrum
The pecten epipharyngis consists of three spines, SI is plumose and labral lamellae are simpel Zalut gr. mucronata labrum. The premandible has two apical teeth and one inner tooth (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984b).
Mandible
The mandible has an apical tooth and 3 inner teeth. The seta interna has smooth branches (Wiederholm, 1983).

Differential characteristics
The combination of the antenna with 6 segments and the mentum with 6 pairs of lateral teeth are characteristic for Hydrobaenus Hydrob lugubris mentum, Trissocladius Trissocl brevipalpis mentum and Zalutschia. Zalutschia differs from both genera by the shape of the mentum and the presence of a small beard Zalut gr. mucronata mentum.
Z. zalutschicola can be separated from M. humphriesiae by the three median teeth on the mentum and a reduced 6th lateral tooth (Z. zalutschicola with two median teeth and normal 6th lateral).
