Pagastiella orophila

Body
Small larvae up to 4 mm long. Living larvae red. Body tapering distinctly caudally. No lateral and ventral tubules (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984a).

Head
Antenna
The antenna consists of 5 segments. Basal segment about 2x as long as the flagellum. The blade is longer than the flagellum. Segment 3 much shorter than segment 2 and 4. Lauterborn organs absent.
Mentum
The mentum has 4 median teeth, the middle pair large and truncated, the outer pair narrow and 6 pairs of lateral teeth Pagastiella mentum. The ventromental plates large and 1.2x as wide as the mentum.
Labrum
SI is simpel and labral lamellae are absent. The pecten epipharyngis is apparently absent and. The premandible has three teeth.
Mandible
The mandible is very slender with all teeth pale and 2 dorsal teeth, apical tooth and 5 inner teeth Pagastiella mandible 8 The pecten mandibularis is present and seta interna with 4 only distally plumose branches.

Differential characteristics
The 4 mid-mental teeth Pagastiella mentum and 5 inner mandibular teeth Pagastiella mandible 8 are distinctive. The small size and the shape of the median teeth of the mentum is also outstanding.
