(Staeger, 1839)
Body
Medium sized to large larvae up to 11 mm long. Living larvae red. No lateral and ventral tubules. Procercus and anal tubules present Pseudoch anal segments (Wiederholm, 1983; Moller Pillot, 1984a).
Head
The clypeus is separate from the frontal apotome. Anterior margin of frontal apotome and clypeus are straight without a subapical pit. Labral sclerite 1 absent scletrite 2 present.
Antenna
The antenna consists of 5 segments. The first segment is longer than the flagellum, the blade is subequal to the flagellum. Lauterborn organs distally on the second segment.
Mentum
The mentum has one median tooth and 6 pairs of lateral teeth. The median and first lateral teeth are fused at their base. The second lateral tooth shorter than it neighbouring teeth Pseudoch mentum 8. The ventromental plates are slender and look like those of Tanytarsini. The plates are 1-1.3x as wide as the mentum.
Labrum
SI is plumose on both sides and labral lamellae form a single plate with 15-30 distal teeth. The pecten epipharyngis consists of 3 slender plates. The premandible has 2 apical teeth.
Mandible
The mandible without a dorsal tooth, apical tooth pale and 4 darker inner teeth. The basal inner tooth is blunt and completely fused with het mandible the others are normal Pseudoch mandible. The pecten mandibularis is absent and seta interna with plumose branches.
Differential characteristics
The mentum with one median tooth and 6 lateral pairs of teeth Pseudoch mentum 8 and the mandible lacking the dorsal tooth and with 4 inner teeth Pseudoch mandible is distinctive for Pseudochironomus.
