Stempellina subglabripennis

(Brundin, 1947)

Body
Small larvae up to 2.5 mm long. The larvae live in a curved transportable case Stempellina tube (Brundin, 1948; Wiederholm, 1983).

Head
The S3 on a pedicel is bifid Stempellina subgl fc pict. On the dorsal head capsule 2 knob-like processes.
Antenna
The antenna stands on a distinct pedestal with a large palmate projection Stina large palmate proces and consists of 5 segments. The basal segment < 1.5 x the flagellum. Segment 2 is wedge-shaped and about as long as the third segment. The large Lauterborn organs distally on segment 2 with a distinct pedestal that does not reach the apex.
Mentum
The mentum has a rounded or notched median tooth and 6 pairs of lateral teeth. The ventromental plates are widely separated and about as wide as the mentum Stempellina mentum.
Labrum
SI is a comb and labral lamellae a single plate with numerous apical teeth. The pecten epipharyngis consists of 3 slender scales that are distally pointed. The premandible has 5 teeth.
Mandible
The mandible with a dorsal tooth, apical tooth and 2 inner teeth. The pecten mandibularis is present and seta interna with branches.

Differential characteristics
Of all Tanytarsini Stempellina and Neostempellinella can be separated by the palmate process on the antennal pedestal Stina large palmate proces. Neostempellinella differs in having an additional simpel apical projection on the pedestal and dorsal headcapsule without knobs.
S. subglabripennis can be separated from the other species by the S3 on a pedicel and basal antennal segment < 1.5 x the flagellum.
